Meteorologists based at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) anticipate a broad area of low pressure to form over the southwest Caribbean Sea to form in the coming days.

According to a 1:00 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST) advisory on Saturday (October 17), the NHC is not ruling out a gradual development of the system once it forms, giving a low, but possible, 30 per cent likelihood within the next five days.

“A broad area of low pressure is expected to form in a few days over the southwestern Caribbean Sea.  Some gradual development of this system will be possible through the middle of next week while it moves slowly northward or north-northwestward over the western Caribbean Sea,” the NHC noted.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, the Florida-headquartered NHC is also monitoring a non-tropical low-pressure system, miles outside of any major impact to the nearest landmass, Bermuda, for further strengthening.

“Showers and thunderstorms continue to show signs of organisation in association with a non-tropical low-pressure system located about 500 miles east-southeast of Bermuda.  Gradual development is expected, and a subtropical depression or storm is very likely to form during the next day or two while the low meanders well to the southeast of Bermuda,” the NHC further explained.

There are no other systems currently being tracked by the National Hurricane Center in the region of the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico at this time.
