It couldn’t have come at a  worse time.

Playing the match of his life in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, news comes that Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios will have to face a charge of assault in court against his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari.

The court hearing, to be held in Australia, is scheduled for next month. If convicted, he may be facing two years in prison.

It is alleged that he assaulted Passari last December.

Krygios has been playing fantastic tennis this year at Wimbledon, beating No 4 seed Stefanos Tsitspas in a tempestuous, bad-tempered match along the way.

Back in 2015, Kyrgios reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. In 2014, a 19-year-old Kyrgios eliminated Rafael Nadal in the fourth round at Wimbledon. The talent and ability has always been there.

“It’s in the context of a domestic relationship. The nature of the allegation is serious and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. Given the matter is before the court, he doesn’t have a comment at this stage but in the fullness of time will issue a release.”

Today (July 6) he faces Chile’s Cristian Garin for a place in the semi-finals of the world’s grass court grand slam event.

Kyrgios’ lawyer Jason Moffett said: “It’s in the context of a domestic relationship. The nature of the allegation is serious and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. Given the matter is before the court, he doesn’t have a comment at this stage but in the fullness of time will issue a release.”

The Aussie is currently dating Costeen Hatzi.

Of Hatzi, he has said: “She is definitely the one. I am in love with her and she is an amazing person. We go through ups and downs together but I love her to bits.”
