With over a decade under her belt and having gained several awards, rapper, songwriter, icon and game changer Nicki Minaj, whose real name is Onika Maraj-Petty, is this year set to receive the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Making the announcement on Twitter earlier this week, MTV noted that the rapper, for the first time in four years, would be taking the VMA stage for the August 28 show.

“CALLING ALL BARBZ, CALLING ALL BARBZ. Presenting your 2022 Video Vanguard Award recipient… @NICKIMINAJ!!! Come party with us as she takes the #VMAs stage for an epic performance, August 28th on MTV!!!”

First awarded in 1984, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is a merit presented to artistes and music video directors for their outstanding contributions and profound impact on music video and popular culture.

Also known as the Video Vanguard Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award, its trophy, unlike the others, is a gold-plated moon person, rather than the traditional silver.

Minaj will become the 35th recipient, standing with the likes of Beyonce, LL Cool J, Rihanna, Missy Elliott, The Beatles and Madonna.

Minaj has been nominated in the Best Hip Hop category, making this her 17th VMA nomination.

Ahead of her anticipated VMA performance, Minaj has released a new single Super Freaky Girl.
