Were you looking forward to heading off to the beach next Monday (August 8), thinking it would be recognised as a holiday since Independence Day falls on the weekend?

Not so fast!

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has clarified for members of the public that Monday is a normal working day.

In a statement today, the Ministry pointed out that Section 2 of the Holidays (Public General) Act, and the Schedule to said Act, provide that Independence Day shall be celebrated on the 6th day of August.

“This year, August 6 falls on a Saturday. Consequently, Monday August 8, 2022, is a normal work day.”

“However, where August 6 falls on a Sunday, Independence Day is to be observed on the following Monday,” the ministry said.

“This year, August 6 falls on a Saturday. Consequently, Monday August 8, 2022, is a normal work day.”

With that in mind, you’d better break out the beach towels and make your way to your favourite spot on Saturday or Sunday. And if you decide to head out on Sunday, get back home early, get some rest, and wake up early for work on Monday!
