Amid media reports detailing sewage overflows in the vicinity of downtown Kingston’s Coronation Market, the National Water Commission (NWC) is rejecting culpability.
In a statement on Friday (November 21), the NWC advised the public that the reports were incorrect while pointing to another source for the ongoing nuisance.
“Following the reports, NWC technical teams conducted thorough inspections at the referenced locations — the intersections of Rose Lane, Spanish Town Road, and Oxford Street. The investigations confirmed that the overflow observed in the area is the result of blocked drainage infrastructure, which is not part of the NWC’s sewage network,” the government-run utility disclosed.
According to the team’s assessment, the affected drains typically convey grey water, which can become stagnant once flow is impeded. These drains fall outside of the NWC’s operational responsibility.
“The NWC also confirms that its sewage conveyance pipelines and the nearby pumping station have experienced no operational issues since the passage of Hurricane Melissa. All NWC wastewater systems in the area remain stable and fully functional,” the entity added.
The commission encouraged media “to verify reports of this nature to ensure the accurate dissemination of information” and reiterated its commitment to maintaining transparency and providing reliable services to all customers.
