Rain forced the abandonment of the West Indies Women final group league match at Basin Reserve against South Africa Women at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

The no-result means the West Indies will have to await the outcomes of the matches between England and Bangladesh and India versus South Africa to determine if they will advance to the semi-finals of the competition.

However, opener Deandra Dottin remained optimistic.

“The girls are still in good spirits. We always have that never-die attitude.”

“We knew coming into this tournament that it was going to be tough. We had to travel after every game so consistency was difficult,” said Dottin.

“We played good cricket, we just didn’t put enough runs on the board in some games. The girls are still in good spirits. We always have that never-say-die attitude. We just have to look forward now.

WEST INDIES WOMEN MOVE TO THIRD IN STANDINGS

Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, West Indies Women had South Africa on the back foot early. Chinelle Henry took 3-11 and Shamilia Connell, 1-18 as South Africa slumped to 22-4 in the sixth over. However, Mignon du Preez was on 38 from 31 deliveries and Marianne Kapp five from eight as South Africa began to rebuild their innings until the rain came.

South Africa were 61-4 in 10.5 overs when the umpires called for the covers and play was eventually called off.

Both teams earned one point each. With it, the West Indies Women move to third on the standings with seven points and now await the outcome of the South Africa-India match on March 27. Should South Africa win, the West Indies will secure a semi-final berth, should India win, then the West Indies will be eliminated.
