Mayor of Spanish Town and Chairman of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation, Councillor Norman Scott, appeared before the St Elizabeth Parish Court today, where he pleaded not guilty to an assault charge arising from an alleged altercation with a political party worker during the September 3 general election.
The incident reportedly occurred in the St East St Elizabeth constituency, which Scott unsuccessfully contested on Wednesday, September 3, on behalf of the People’s National Party.
The complainant, a Jamaica Labour Party worker, later made a formal report to the police, resulting in a criminal charge being laid against the mayor.
Scott, who is a senior member of the PNP, is scheduled to return to court on November 27, when the case is again set for mention.
The matter, which has drawn significant public attention given Scott’s political standing, also featured the appearance of President of the Senate Tom Tavares-Finson, KC, his son, and a team of seven attorneys. Tavares-Finson, a leading member of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), indicated that he will apply for a fiat to prosecute the case, a move that, if granted, would authorise him to act on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Presiding over the hearing is Judge Steve Walters.
Scott is represented by attorney Charles Ganga-Singh, who maintained confidence in his client’s defence.
“Even if they come with fifty lawyers, I am willing to take them on,” Ganga-Singh said.
Scott remains on bail pending his next court appearance.
