The Secondary School Gridiron League (SSGL) is announcing the resumption of its 2025 Championship Season with a revised schedule designed to prioritise student-athlete participation and safety.

In light of the ongoing challenges facing Jamaica, particularly in St Elizabeth parish, in the wake of Hurricane Melissa on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the league is committed to harnessing the unifying power of sport to foster resilience, community, and normalcy for young athletes across the island.

“As we navigate these difficult times, the SSGL remains steadfast in our belief that gridiron football can serve as a beacon of hope and positivity,” said SSGL Leadership. “Our revised season structure ensures that every team has a chance to compete, providing our student-athletes with an outlet to channel their energy, build camaraderie, and end the year on a triumphant note.”

The updated tackle football championship schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, January 16 & 17: Final Regular Season Games
  • Friday, January 23: First Round of Playoffs (Top 8 teams qualify)
  • Friday, January 30: Second Round of Playoffs
  • Saturday, February 7: SSGL National Championship at UWI Mona Bowl

This inclusive playoff format aims to support athletes from affected areas by extending opportunities for engagement while concluding the season before the NFL Super Bowl.

In parallel, the SSGL is excited to launch the 2025 Fag Football seasons for both boys and girls, offering non-contact alternatives that promote skill-building and inclusivity.

  • Girls’ Flag Football: Preseason matchups begin on Wednesday, January 28, culminating in a Flag Tournament on February 7 at the SSGL National Tournament venue.
  • Boys’ Flag Football: Games commence on February 13.

The flag football format will feature 3-4 teams gathering at pre-scheduled school locations for 2-3 games per session, mirroring the successful 2025 flag season structure. The league will conclude with a National Tournament on March 14 at Brooks Park, supported by the international ministry “Athletes in Action,” which will assist in organising and elevating the event.

Current national rankings and standings are attached for reference, highlighting the competitive landscape as teams prepare for the resumption.

The SSGL extends heartfelt gratitude to coaches, officials, school administrators, and athletes for their dedication and flexibility. Together, we embody the strength and unity of Jamaica.
The SSGL is Jamaica’s premier interscholastic gridiron football organisation, dedicated to developing young talent through tackle and flag formats. Emphasising sportsmanship, education, and community, the league unites secondary schools nationwide in fostering the next generation of athletes.
