The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has served the National Water Commission (NWC) an enforcement notice outlining specific terms to which it must comply following a fish kill in the Rio Cobre on Christmas Eve.
The notice, to be served today, December 27, stems from a fish kill due to a malfunctioning NWC sewage treatment plant that caused untreated sewage to be emitted into the Old John’s Gully, which flows into the river.
Approximately 50 fishes were killed.
NEPA says the NWC has since corrected the problem, which was reportedly due to a power outage at the
plant.
The fish kill is now contained.
