The National Water Commission (NWC) is advising customers in sections of Salt Marsh in Trelawny that restoration works on the affected pipeline network are progressing steadily following damage sustained during recent weather events.
The Commission notes that concerns regarding the integrity of sections of the pipeline were identified prior to the passage of Hurricane Melissa. Subsequent post-event assessments confirmed that approximately 3 kilometres of pipeline infrastructure were significantly impacted, necessitating extensive rehabilitation works. It is worth noting that while a substantial part of the Martha Brae/Salt Marsh area has been restored, more time and resources are necessary to restore pockets of the network, such as this one.
The current scope of works is aimed not only at restoring water supply in the shortest possible time, but also at addressing longstanding vulnerabilities within the network to support improved reliability over the long term. These efforts include the replacement of damaged pipeline sections and the strengthening of critical interconnections.
The NW reports that works are now approximately 30 per cent complete. Upon completion of pipeline installation activities, additional time will be required to conduct pressure testing and sterilisation of the system to ensure that water quality and service standards are fully met prior to the resumption of supply.
Based on current progress, the Commission is targeting completion of these works and the phased restoration of service by May 15, 2026.
“We recognise the inconvenience being experienced and understand the frustration of affected customers. In the interim, the Commission will provide scheduled trucked water support to assist residents while restoration works progress,” the commission said.
The NWC also acknowledges concerns raised by customers regarding the receipt of bills during periods of disrupted supply.
“The Commission advises that immediate checks and investigations have commenced into these reports and is encouraging affected customers to make contact as these reviews are undertaken. The NW thanks customers for their continued patience and understanding as we work to restore a safe and reliable water supply to the affected areas.”
