The official music video for Skip Marley’s Lions (Champions Mix), chosen earlier this year as the anthem for the 2022 Concacaf Women’s (ConcafW) Championship, was released on Monday (July 4), coinciding with the start of the annual football competition.
First released in 2017, the remixed track now titled Lions (Champions Mix), has retained most of its lyrical content and made only a few adjustments to its words to suit its new purpose.
The track has also served as the soundtrack for the controversial 2017 Pepsi commercial starring American model, Kendall Jenner.
Marley, who described this track as a self-empowerment anthem, promotes inner strength, motivation and determination.
Uploading the three minute and 27 second video in a collab post, both @concacafw and @concacaf wrote: “The official music video for “Lion (Champions Mix)” by @skipmarley ft. @cedellamarley – The official song of the #ConcacafW Championship 🏆.”
The track’s music video features clips of Marley as well as current and aspiring-kid female football players showcasing their talent on the field. Showing several matches between a number of teams, the video also skips to clips of celebrations.
Marley yesterday (July 6) made a story repost of the Reggae Girlz reaction to the song’s accompanying music video. The Reggae Girlz, appearing content with the sneak peak, were all smiles, laughs and cheers.

According to Concacaf, Lions (Champions Mix) is a part of their effort to “engage fans in authentic and innovative ways as the organisation is steadfast in its commitment to growing women’s football.”
Lions Champions Mix also names the artiste’s mother, Cedella Marley, as a featured act.
“We were honored when Concacaf approached us to re-work my song Lions. This song and the message of collective strength and resolve is fitting when we think of women on and off the pitch.
“The women competing in this tournament are inspirational and we hope Lions connects with
them, their fans and the next generation!” said Skip Marley and Cedella Marley.
