Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Fitz Bailey says one person of interest was taken into custody on Friday (November 10), in relation to the bomb threats that were received by several institutions including schools, healthcare facilities, and the courts.

DCP Bailey who provided an update on the bomb threat situation that has sparked fear in the public domain, said the individual is now in police custody in relation to the threats made on Friday.

The identity of the individual has not been revealed by the police.

According to the police, 71 institutions were impacted by bomb threats that were sent via email between November 9 and 10.

Several classes were also cancelled due to bomb threats being sent to schools in Clarendon, Kingston, and St Catherine via email.

DCP Bailey said the Jamaica Constabulary Force continues to lead the multi-agency investigation and maintain dialogue with its international counterparts.

He said the JCF with the support from its law enforcement partners will investigate all reports received as every threat is treated seriously until proven otherwise.

Bailey also encouraged individuals to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves but noted that there is no need for panic as the evidence gathered so far indicates that the threats are a hoax.
