At 12:44 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, a catastrophic incident occurred at the Jet Set Club in Santo Domingo, claiming the lives of at least 221 people and leaving more than 260 injured. This tragedy is among the most devastating non-weather-related events in the country’s recent history, plunging the Dominican people into deep national mourning.
In the wake of this national calamity, His Excellency Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic, declared six days of official mourning from April 8 to April 13. Throughout this period, the national flag is being flown at half-mast across the country as a symbol of collective grief and remembrance.
The Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Jamaica, on behalf of the Government and people of the Dominican Republic, expresses its deepest gratitude to Dr Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, as well as to the Jamaican authorities, the diplomatic and international community, and the Jamaican people for their heartfelt expressions of sympathy and solidarity. Your support brings comfort in this time of profound sorrow.
