The Opposition People’s National Party unequivocally condemns the disturbing and deeply troubling incident involving members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force as captured in widely circulated video footage, in which a 15-year-old student was assaulted.

The PNP said this “appalling incident” has sparked outrage across the nation, and on the face of it, reflects a “gross abuse of authority and an unacceptable use of force against a child”. The party said that no society that values the rule of law and the dignity of its citizens can tolerate such behaviour, particularly from those sworn to serve and protect.

“We call on the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) to launch a full and transparent investigation into this matter, and for all officers involved to be held fully accountable under the law. Immediate action must also be taken by the leadership of the Jamaica Constabulary Force to ensure that incidents of this nature are not tolerated,” the party said.

Opposition Spokesperson on Justice Senator Donna Scott-Mottley stated that this is a reminder that further work is needed to reform the culture and operations of our security forces. “We must prioritise training in human rights, de-escalation techniques, and sensitivity with vulnerable members of the community, especially minors,” said Senator Scott-Mottley.

The Opposition stands firmly with the victim and their family and joins the Jamaican people in demanding accountability and reform. Our children must be protected, not brutalised by those in positions of power.
