After giving notice in Parliament on Tuesday (April 27), of his intention to table a private bill on impeachment, Opposition Leader, Mark Golding has done just that.
The private bill is being introduced at a time when pressure continues to mount for Westmoreland Central Member of Parliament George Wright to resign from his post in the Lower House, after a viral video in which a man said to be Wright was seen abusing a woman.
Though the police’s probe into the incident was inconclusive, due to the unwillingness of the parties involved to press charges, Wright has since taken a leave of absence from the House.

Golding’s attempt at introducing the private impeachment bill comes just a week after former Prime Minister Bruce Golding encouraged members of the public to force lawmakers’ to re-table an impeachment bill that he sought to get approved in Parliament prior to leaving office.
The former prime minister noted that legislation to impeach public officials who run afoul of the law was included in the Jamaica Labour Party manifesto in the run-up to the 2007 general election and is one of the unfulfilled promises of his successor Andrew Holness’s administration.
