Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr Alfred Dawes has urged Jamaicans to take heart health seriously while calling for stronger national investment in preventive care and treatment, as the country joined the global community in observing World Heart Day on Monday.

Dr Dawes noted that cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of death both worldwide and in Jamaica, robbing families and communities of loved ones and limiting the nation’s potential. He stressed that tackling the issue requires both personal responsibility and systemic reform.

“Every Jamaican deserves access to affordable preventive care, timely diagnosis, and effective treatment,” Dr Dawes said. He added that the public health system must be strengthened with more investment in primary care and wider public education campaigns, enabling lifestyle changes, early detection, and accessible treatment for all citizens.

The Opposition, he explained, remains committed to advancing policies that prioritise heart health and overall wellness. This includes pressing for expanded screening programmes, greater access to essential medications, and the creation of healthier living environments.

Dr Dawes used the occasion to call for renewed national commitment to reducing preventable deaths from cardiovascular disease. “Strong hearts build strong families, strong communities, and indeed, a strong nation,” he stated.

World Heart Day is observed each year on September 29, with a focus on raising awareness about cardiovascular disease and encouraging individuals, communities, and governments to take action to protect heart health.
