“At last! Tonight it was the turn of Shericka Jackson!”
That was the declaration from the commentary box tonight (July 21) at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon as Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson took her first major championship individual gold medal with a phenomenal championship record run of 21.45 to overtake compatriot Elaine Thompson-Herah as the fastest woman alive over 200m.

Jackson’s time is bettered only by American Florence Griffith Joyner’s 21.34, set at the Olympics in Seoul, South Korea in 1988, which is now certainly under serious threat.
Finishing second was Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who just days ago bested Jackson to claim her own gold in the 100m.

Fraser-Pryce’s time of 21.81 was a season best.
Finishing third was defending champion, Great Britain’s Dina-Asher Smith in 22.02.
Thompson-Herah, Jamaica’s double Olympic sprint champion, who took bronze in the 100m but has clearly not been in top form over these championships, finished seventh in 22.39.
