Prolific sprinter Andre De Grasse of Canada has won his first major sporting title on Wednesday (August 4), with an impressive gold medal run in the men’s 200m final at the Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan.

De Grasse, one of two Canadians in the final, held on to win in a cool 19.62 seconds—denying Americans Kenny Bednarek (19.68s) and Noah Lyles (19.74s), who copped respective silver and bronze medals.

The 26-year-old set a new national record in the process and becomes the first Canadian to win in the 200m since Percy Williams’ sprint double at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam.

Rasheed Dwyer, the lone Jamaican in the final, clocked 20.21s to finish in seventh after valiantly trying to stay with the leaders and fading into the backstraight.
