Lamont Marcell Jacobs created history on Sunday (August 1) as the first Italian man to ever win gold in the 100 metres finals at the Tokyo Olympics.
It was a joyous occasion for Italy, which celebrated two golds as Jacobs and joint high jump champion Gianmarco Tamberi were at winning ways in Japan.
The 26-year-old, born in El Paso, Texas, bested a quality field to claim his first Olympic title in a new national record (and personal best time) of 9.80 seconds.
Fred Kerley of the United States won the silver medal, while Canada’s Andre de Grasse took the bronze.
For the first time in over 20 years, Jamaica lacked any representation in the finals of the coveted sprint event, with Yohan Blake and Oblique Seville crashing out in the semi-finals hours earlier.
