Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas established a new world record in the women’s long jump at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Sunday (August 1), but Jamaica’s two representatives in the event failed to get a spot on the medal podium.

Rojas leapt a massive 15.67 metres to break the old mark of 15.50 set by Ukraine’s Inessa Kravets in 1995 in Sweden.

Rojas got the record on her sixth and final jump, with her farthest jump in the final before that, being the 15.41 which she did on her first attempt.

The silver medal was won by Patricia Mamona of Portugal with a national record of 15.01 metres as Ana Peleteiro of Spain also did a national record of 14.87 for bronze.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts finished fourth in the event as she jumped 14.84 metres on her fourth attempt, while Kimberly Williams ended eighth with the third attempt of 14.51 metres.
