Mark Golding, winner of the People’s National Party presidential election.

As delegates prepared to decide on the next leader of the People’s National Party (PNP), participants in an Our Today poll overwhelmingly threw their suppport behind Mark Golding as successor to the outgoing Dr Peter Phillips.

Among voters, 71.4 per cent tipped Golding to win the election held today (November 7), while 28.6 per cent favoured Hanna.

The result was far more decisive than the delegate vote, announced at 4:30 this afternoon, where 1,740 selected Golding and 1,444 marked their ballot for Hanna.

The online poll, which ran on the Our Today homepage between yesterday and today, followed a similar poll which saw Our Today readers selecting Joe Biden for United States president over the incumbent Donald Trump.

While the U.S. election was held on November 3, the results of both were announced yesterday, thrusting supporters of both Biden and Golding into jubilant celebration.

Both the U.S. president-elect and the PNP president-elect will now face the difficult tasks of bringing unity to their respective country and political organisation.

In the case of Golding, the new PNP president has already extended the olive branch to his rival, Hanna, saying he is ready to sit with her and her team “to share our vision for the People’s National Party”.
