Over 100 guests gathered at 100 Hope Road on Thursday evening for the media launch of the highly anticipated 61st Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament.

Hosted by the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association (SHMAA), the event marked the beginning of another exciting chapter in Jamaica’s premier sport fishing competition.

Set to commence on October 8, 2024, the tournament continues its legacy of excitement, conservation, and community engagement while promoting Jamaica as a world-class sportfishing destination.

The media launch shone a spotlight on Sterling Asset Management, which returns as the title sponsor, further solidifying its long-standing partnership with the tournament and the Port Antonio community.

Michelle Valentine, AVP marketing and communications at Sterling Asset Management, spoke to the company’s decade-long support, sharing: “As title sponsor, we are thrilled to renew our commitment to the Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament. For over ten years, Sterling has proudly supported this event, which not only celebrates sportfishing but also contributes significantly to the local economy, tourism, and environmental preservation.”

The tournament will begin on October 8 with the canoe tournament, providing a spotlight on local fishing talent and Jamaica’s traditional fishing methods.

Following this, the main event kicks off on October 9 with the captain’s briefing and a welcome aboard party, setting the stage for the highly competitive fishing days from October 10-12.

The 61st Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament is expected to draw anglers and spectators from around the globe, further enhancing Port Antonio’s reputation as a premier destination for sportfishing.

In addition to its competitive spirit, the tournament serves as a critical driver for local tourism and economic growth, while also highlighting Jamaica’s efforts in environmental sustainability through its strict catch-and-release policy for marlin under 99 inches or 300 pounds.

Stephen Silvera, director at SHMAA, expressed deep gratitude to the tournament’s returning sponsors, whose support has been instrumental in its continued success.

During the launch, Maxim Rochester, Chair of SHMAA, reflected on the rich history of the Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament, noting its pivotal role in promoting not only sport but also tourism in Jamaica.

He reiterated the importance of the tournament’s conservation efforts, highlighting the catch-and-release policy as a testament to the event’s dedication to preserving marine life and ensuring the sustainability of Jamaica’s natural environment.

Guest speaker Greg Shirley, director at Jamaica Broilers, emphasized the broader significance of events like the marlin tournament in protecting Jamaica’s natural beauty.

He pointed out the key role they play in both tourism promotion and environmental awareness, encouraging a balance between sport and ecological preservation.
