PAC Kingston Airport Limited (PACKAL), the operator of Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, has defended its decision to require a degree as part of the qualifications for the role of car park attendant.

The company has faced public backlash following a job advertisement that listed the need for applicants to have an intermediate command of Spanish, a bachelor’s degree in tourism management, marketing, or a related field, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

In a statement issued on Monday, PACKAL explained that, as a relatively young company, it is focused on recruiting graduates who can grow with the organisation. Consequently, the company has removed the requirement for work experience and chosen to prioritise educational qualifications that will allow candidates to progress into other areas of the business.

PACKAL also pointed out that, during its five years of operation, six car park attendants have advanced to higher roles within the organisation due to their degrees.

“Our car park attendants are integral members of our airport operations team, responsible for critical aspects of customer experience, security monitoring, revenue management, and facility supervision. Our compensation package is therefore commensurate with the scope of the responsibilities. In addition to being a full-time, salaried position with health and life insurance, we also offer a pension with immediate vesting, annual bonuses, grocery vouchers, and other benefits,” said PACKAL.

The company further noted that its six car parks are frequented by thousands of users each week and are automated. Therefore, high-level customer service support is required to assist users with navigating the systems, as well as ensuring compliance with essential procedures.

PACKAL added that it has received a large number of applications for the role, with approximately 30 per cent of applicants holding a degree.
