Patricia Sutherland, president of the People’s National Party (PNP) Women’s Movement, is calling out Member of Parliament for Eastern St Thomas, Michelle Charles, for a controversial video where the representative pushes an orange rag up the skirt of a constituent.

Sutherland, in an open letter over weekend, argued that while Charles’ TikTok video has since been deleted and an apology offered to the general public, little to no attention has been given to the matter by the leadership of governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

The statement reads in full:

“Dear Most Hon. Andrew Holness, Hon. Horace Chang, and Hon. Babsy Grange:

Over the weekend, a disturbing video surfaced, showing Member of Parliament Dr. Michelle Charles engaging in an act of abuse and humiliation towards a constituent, Ms. K. In this video, Ms. K stands helplessly, as her Member of Parliament lifts her skirt and pushes a rag up her dress. The Member of Parliament laughs and exclaims her party’s political moniker. Ms. K does not smile. The Member of Parliament has someone record this awkward exchange, and proudly posts it to social media for everyone to see.

This disgusting incident has shocked the nation and goes against the principles of respect, dignity, and equality that we expect from our political leaders.

As we celebrate our Emancipation from slavery and Independence from colonialism, incidents like these are stark reminders of the oppressive systems that our ancestors fought against. It is disheartening to witness a person in power using their authority to violate and ridicule a fellow Jamaican, particularly during a time when we should be reflecting on our history and celebrating our triumphs over such injustices.

While the Member of Parliament in question has issued an apology, we firmly believe that this act requires more than just words. As leaders of the Jamaica Labour Party, we implore you to openly condemn her actions and what they represent for Jamaicans. A mere apology is insufficient; we must send a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated within the political ranks.

If we are to believe that the JLP values Jamaican women, we call upon you to take decisive action and indicate to Dr. Michelle Charles that her actions have disqualified her from running in the

next election. The issue of abuse of women and class prejudice must be addressed frontally, and Jamaicans need to know that their leaders will treat all citizens with dignity and respect in spite of their socio-economic background.

Again, we bring to your attention the cases of MP George Wright and Councillor David Brown, two representatives elected on the JLP ticket, who have been accused of physically abusing women and have not denied it. The lack of action and condemnation from the JLP regarding these allegations is deeply concerning. We urge you to assure the public that neither of these men will be representing the JLP in any upcoming election.

As we move forward, we hope that the JLP will actively promote a culture of respect, equality, and accountability. Addressing these issues is not only a matter of political responsibility but would also reflect your expressed commitment to building a fair and just society for all Jamaicans.

We trust that you will take these concerns seriously and demonstrate your dedication to upholding the values we hold dear as a nation. It is time for the JLP to take a stand against abusive behaviour and show unwavering support for the rights and dignity of all citizens.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Patricia Sutherland”
