The Government of Peru has issued instructions for the reopening of an embassy in Kingston, Jamaica, “with the aim of strengthening its relations” with the island nation.

While describing Jamaica as a “valuable strategic partner”, the South American country’s president, Dina Boluarte, and Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer, charged the foreign affairs department to allocate the necessary resources for the reopening and maintenance of the embassy.

Jamaica’s membership in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), “would facilitate Peru’s access to mechanisms of political, commercial, scientific-technological, and cultural cooperation, as well as efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking”, a decree bearing the president’s and minister of foreign affairs signatures stated.

“It would also provide opportunities for attracting investment within the bloc, contributing to energising political ties with the non-Spanish-speaking Caribbean region,” the document added.

In a diplomatic note dated May 27, 2025, the Jamaican Government gave its consent for the reopening of the Peruvian embassy in Kingston.

The Peruvian Government also highlighted that Jamaica has a“geostrategic position in the Caribbean”, with the advantage of hosting one of the region’s main ports, allowing for Peru to strengthen its commercial positioning.
