The movement and recycling of coaches in the Jamaica Premier League continues as Phillip Williams has packed his bags from Tivoli Gardens and is now the head coach of Arnett Gardens.
Williams was the assistant coach at Tivoli Gardens last season, but previously he was the head coach in 2019—head coach at Portmore United and Dunbeholden FC.
Williams replaced Xavier Gilbert, who replaced Paul Davis at Montego Bay United.
In a club statement on June 19, Arnett Gardens made the announcement, saying he brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success both at schoolboy and premier league levels.
Arnett Gardens’ general manager Peter Thelwell said that “the coach of Arnett Gardens must be one armed with the right combination of tactical acumen and a history of success in developing youth players as well as the ability to integrate with our community and fans. Coach Williams checked all those boxes so we are excited to welcome Phillip Williams to the Arnett Gardens family,” he added.
Williams, one of the island’s most promising coaches, will take the hot seat at Arnett Gardens, a club that loves the beautiful game, and he will have to hit the ground running as the “Junglist” are not easily pleased.
But Williams comes with a lot of experience, having coached at four Premier League teams plus St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS).
Last year, Williams had to give up his coaching role at Dunbeholden in favour of his teaching job at STATHS; hence, he returned as assistant coach to Jerome Waite at Tivoli Gardens FC.
But unlike Dunbeholden, Arnett Gardens is just up the road from STATHS, which would make travelling much easier for Williams.
