The Jamaican Government is committed to upgrading the country’s medical facilities and that is clear to see with the Spanish Town Hospital.
The British Government built the hospital in 1952 with a budget of £180,000 with £123,000 of that given to Jamaica by way of grants.
Today, the redevelopment project which will include a six-storey facility with modern medical technology will be funded from a budget of J$5.5 billion.
The European Union (EU) has provided a grant of £10 million and Jamaica will access a loan of US$50 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
However, the lion’s share of the funding, some US$87 million, will be provided by the Government of Jamaica via taxpayers contributions.
