Pixar Animation Studios may have to add “ecstasy” as a new emotion to Riley’s panel after the historic performance of the animated family comedy ‘Inside Out 2‘ in international cinemas this summer.
Within just six weeks of its release, ‘Inside Out 2‘ has become the highest-grossing animated film of all time at the global box office.
The film has amassed US$1.46 billion at the box office so far to edge out both ‘Barbie‘ and ‘Frozen 2‘ which cashed in US$1.45 billion in 2023 and 2019 respectively.
Despite still sitting behind the US$1.65 billion made from Disney’s 2019 adaptation of ‘The Lion King‘, ‘Inside Out’s revenue is likely to continue on a positive incline with cinemas in Japan yet to roll the film.
On the American scale, the summer blockbuster could take down ‘Incredibles 2‘ (US$608 million) in a matter of days, with the two being the only animated films to hit US$600 million in North America.

The record-breaking sequel takes the 13th spot on the highest-grossing film of the all-time list but has much distance to go if it is to catch up ‘Avatar‘ atop the table with an eye-watering US$2.9 billion.
Notwithstanding, the news brings much consolation to Pixar following its rocky journey on the animated family marketing scene coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Families skipped the traditional movie theatre night to enjoy animations made readily available on streaming platforms, including three of Pixar’s films which were sent straight to streaming by former Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s regime.
‘Inside Out 2‘ focuses on a young girl named Riley who navigates her life in high school while making room for her complex new set of emotions personified by a group of characters.
The prequel, ‘Inside Out‘, was also a box office success back in 2015, generating US$858.8 million in global sales.
