Jamaica is looking to sever constitutional ties to Great Britain and discussions are taking place about the merits of becoming a republic.

Some believe the Privy Council should remain the final appellate court, while others believe the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) should be so.

When Prince William and Princess Kate last visited Jamaica, Prime Minister Andrew Holnes made it clear that the island would be going down a different road and was making preparations to be no longer inextricably tied to the British monarchy.

Speaking at a PNP Outreach Commission Region 3 forum called ‘Let’s Get the Record Straight, Lest We Forget’ held at The Summit in New Kingston, former Prime Minister PJ Patterson explained why certain constitutional changes were not made under his long administration.
