After scoring 132 runs and taking seven wickets during the three ODI series against Pakistan Women, Barbados and West Indies Women all-rounder Hayley Matthews was named Player of the Series.

Happy to be recognised, Matthews said she was just happy to have been able to contribute to the team’s comprehensive 3-0 series sweep as it prepared for the ICC World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe later this month.

“I always try my absolute best to do as well as I possibly can for the team,” said Matthews, who had scores of 57, 26 and 49 to average 44 for the series.

“We as players have been working really hard for a while now and I am just really happy I was able to come down here and execute well. The wicket was really good so it was really good that I was able to bat and bowl well on it, so I am happy that I was able to get in some performances but even more happy for a team win.”

“I think, for me, I was probably a bit disappointed that I didn’t get a couple more runs with the bat but at the same time grateful that I was able to have a huge all-round performance and, most important, contribute to team wins.”

On Sunday, Matthews just missed out on a second half-century for the series when she was dismissed for 49 following a 98-run third-wicket stand with Captain Stafanie Taylor (102*) as the West Indies marched to a score of 226-4 in reply to Pakistan Women’s 225-7 to win by six-wickets with six overs to spare.

She agreed she would have liked to have got a few more runs under her belt.

“What was really important was assessing the conditions. I think I was able to understand that and just do what I needed to do,” she said.

“I think, for me, I was probably a bit disappointed that I didn’t get a couple more runs with the bat but at the same time grateful that I was able to have a huge all-round performance and, most important, contribute to team wins.

The West Indies Women will now travel to Zimbabwe to the next assignment, the ICC World Cup qualifiers where they open up against Papua New Guinea on Sunday, November 21
