The People’s National Party (PNP) is commending Councillor Scean Barnswell, the Party’s representative for the Hayes Division in Clarendon, and his wife, for their “swift, courageous, and heroic actions” which led to the rescue of a six-year-old child abducted from her school.

The PNP said that based on reports, Barnswell acted with “incredible presence of mind and instinctive bravery” and did not hesitate.

“He and his wife took immediate action upon spotting the man and small child on Bustamante Highway, and through their decisive intervention, ensured the safe recovery of a terrified little girl and the apprehension of the suspect now in police custody,” the party said.

“This was not an act of politics. This was an act of pure humanity, a moment where duty to community transcended all else. In the spur of the moment, Councillor Barnswell exemplified the very essence of what it means to be a public servant: alert, responsive, and fearless in the defence of the vulnerable. His actions, supported unequivocally by his wife, were nothing short of heroic. They saw a child in peril and became her protectors,” the PNP said in a release.

It added: “The PNP has always maintained that true leadership is demonstrated in action, not just in words. Councillor Barnswell’s conduct embodies the spirit of community vigilance and selflessness that our Party champions. His quick thinking under pressure averted what could have been an unspeakable tragedy, providing solace not only to a relieved family but to an entire nation shaken by this brazen crime.

“We extend our profound gratitude to the Councillor and his wife. We also commend the members of the public who raised the alarm and the Jamaica Constabulary Force for their rapid response. This incident highlights the critical importance of community-police partnership, and societal vigilance in protecting our children.

“The People’s National Party stands firmly with Councillor Barnswell, his family, the rescued child, her family, and the community.. We urge all Jamaicans to draw inspiration from this act of bravery and to reaffirm our collective commitment to safeguarding every child in our nation.”
