The People’s National Party mourns the passing of Arthur Nelson, former Member of Parliament for West Central St James, a devoted servant of the Jamaican people whose quiet dignity and genuine commitment to his constituents left a lasting mark on public life.

A professional engineer by training, Mr Nelson brought rigour, integrity and practical good sense to his parliamentary service. He won consecutive general elections in 1993 and 1997, earning the trust of the people of West Central St James not through grand gestures, but through consistent, principled representation.

Mr Nelson was a man of remarkable humility. In an era when appearances often matter more than actions, he was known to take the bus to Parliament, a quiet but telling statement about who he was and the values he held. He never sought to place himself above the people he served.

His dedication to the constituency and to the wider party did not end when he left parliamentary office. As recently as the 2020 general elections, Mr Nelson returned to the campaign trail in his former area, lending his voice, his energy and his presence to PNP candidates, demonstrating that his love for the party and for the people of St James was lifelong and unconditional.

He passed at the age of 91, having lived a full and purposeful life in service to his profession, his party and his country.

The People’s National Party extends its deepest sympathies to his beloved wife Barbara, their children Shaun, Mark and Andrea, and to all other family members, friends, former colleagues and the constituents who were fortunate enough to have been represented by a man of his character.

Arthur Nelson served with honour. He will be remembered with great affection and the highest respect. May he rest in eternal peace.
