The People’s National Party acknowledges with deep respect and sadness the passing of Bishop Burchell A McPherson, Bishop Emeritus of Montego Bay.
The PNP said Jamaica has lost a true shepherd, a man of unwavering faith, and a dedicated champion for the poor and marginalised.
Bishop Burchell’s life was a testament to the power of “faith in action”.
From his early days of service in the Catholic Youth Movement to his transformative leadership as the Bishop of Montego Bay, he remained a grounded figure in Jamaica’s religious landscape. His commitment to social justice was lived daily through his work with Food For The Poor Jamaica, as a director for many years, and his tireless efforts to provide for the homeless and vulnerable, particularly during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beyond his pastoral duties, Bishop Burchell was a visionary who understood that education and sustainable development are the keys to breaking the cycle of poverty. His instrumental role in establishing the Monsignor Gladstone Wilson College for Boys stands as a lasting legacy of his belief in the potential of our youth.
His wisdom, humility, and steady leadership served as a bridge between the spiritual and the temporal, reminding us all of our collective responsibility to look after “the least among us”.
He served the Diocese of Montego Bay and the wider Jamaican community with dignity and compassion that earned him the love and respect of people from all walks of life.
The People’s National Party also offers our sincerest sympathies to Bishop McPherson’s family, friends, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Montego Bay, and the many lives he touched across our nation.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy of service continue to inspire us all,” the PNP said.
