The People’s National Party extends its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Colombia following the devastating earthquake that struck the country today, resulting in loss of life, injuries and significant damage to communities.

Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign, Regional and Diaspora Affairs, Senator Donna Scott-Mottley, expressed solidarity with the people of Colombia and with the families whose lives have been suddenly and painfully affected. “At this difficult moment, our thoughts are with the people of Colombia, particularly those who have lost loved ones, those who have been injured, and the families anxiously awaiting word on the safety of their relatives and friends. We know all too well in this region how quickly a natural disaster can change lives and leave communities facing uncertainty and loss.”

Senator Scott-Mottley also commended the emergency responders, healthcare workers, volunteers and ordinary citizens who have joined the efforts to rescue and assist those affected. “The courage of those who are working through the rubble, caring for the injured and supporting their neighbours is a reminder of the strength that emerges when people come together in the face of adversity. We commend all those who are putting themselves at risk to save and protect others.”

The PNP recognises the longstanding friendship between Jamaica and Colombia and the bonds that connect our Caribbean and Latin American neighbours. At times of tragedy, these bonds take on an even greater meaning as we extend compassion and solidarity to those facing loss and uncertainty.

The People’s National Party stands with Colombia during this difficult time and extends its sincere sympathies to the families who are grieving, those who have been injured, and the communities working to recover from this tragedy.
