The People’s National Party (PNP) is calling on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to take immediate action against escalating attacks on the media by party member Everald Warmington.

The PNP said during a recent Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) conference, Warmington targeted the RJRGLEANER Communications Group, vowing to intensify his campaign against them despite growing criticism.

“This rhetoric poses a serious threat to journalist safety and undermines Jamaica’s democratic values. Warmington has a documented history of abusive behavior towards journalists, including obscene gestures and disrespectful language. The Prime Minister’s inaction raises significant concerns about his commitment to press freedom. While Holness has publicly supported this freedom, his failure to condemn Warmington’s behavior is troubling. Warmington’s assertion that he will secure a third JLP term “by any means necessary” marks a concerning shift in political discourse, jeopardizing the integrity and safety of the media,” the party said.

The PNP said it has approached concerns about media bias through professional channels, engaging directly with media owners and organizations like the Media Association Jamaica (MAJ).

“Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon recently highlighted the importance of not attacking the media, stating, “Even if it’s a hard question, they are doing their job.” Yet, the lack of a direct condemnation of Warmington’s actions by her or the Prime Minister reflects a significant inconsistency,” the PNP added.

The party is now urging the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) and the MAJ to promote a national dialogue that fosters respect between political figures and the media.
