The sun stayed high in the sky as PNP supporters descended upon the National Arena yesterday afternoon in what could be the PNP’s last conference before a general election.

Some even say that the next conference will see the party formed by Norman Manley in power again with Mark Golding as prime minister.

It was a sea of orange and yellow and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that the PNP’s base is energised based on this showing. The next election is likely to be a close contest with the PNP putting in a better showing than last time.

Our Today caught up with Leader of Opposition Business Senator Peter Bunting, who said: “I have been attending PNP conferences for over forty years and this is among the very best. The production and stage set was cutting-edge. The energy at conference was palpable and the attendance was huge.

“I thought the content of the leader’s presentation was very good and he gave a good sense of what is to come.”

There has been a lot of discussion about dancehall star Vybz Kartel appearing on stage. Should an entertainer who faced trial for murder (though not convicted) be hailed in the way that he was? What message does this send to Jamaica?

Bunting responded: “It has generated a bifurcated reaction depending on where you are on the age spectrum, with younger people loving it and older people frowning upon it. Let’s not forget that Bobby Montague as Minister of National Security invited Ninja Man, then on a murder charge to speak at a JCF ‘Blast Off’ event.”

Yellow is the colour of sun rays.
