Opposition Spokesperson on gender affairs, Denise Daley, is calling for the implementation of mental health education awareness programmes to address the needs of men and boys.

“Madam Speaker, our men and boys are also at risk as they suffer from anxiety, depression, and
mental health issues. Madam Speaker, this is of major concern. These issues are made worse by cultural expectations, economic challenges, and social pressure that our men and boys experience on a daily basis,” Daley said.

The shadow minister, in her contribution to the 2024-25 Sectoral Debate on Tuesday (June 25), noted that these factors contribute to domestic abuse, crime, and violence in the country.

“We also need mental health education awareness programs to be developed that specifically address the needs of men and boys. There should also be more programs like Male Awareness Now (MAN) and peer support groups that provide support and promote awareness,” Daley said in Parliament.

“Madam Speaker, programmes like these will reduce stigma and promote better mental health. Madam Speaker, if this is not addressed, we will not be able to address crime and violence in this country in its entirety,” she added.
