Opposition caretaker for Central St Mary, Omar Newell, is calling for the staffing issues at the Port Maria Hospital to be immediately addressed as this has led to healthcare workers being overworked and the hospital short-staffed.
Newell said that contrary to reports, healthcare professionals at the institution are not staging a “sick out”. Instead, he said they are severely understaffed.
“My information is that the hospital’s management team has been actively working to address the staffing shortage by conducting interviews for new hires. However, delays have been encountered during the final employment approval process at the regional level. These delays are adding further pressure to the already hardworking hospital staff,” Newell argued.
Newell is calling on portfolio minister Dr Christopher Tufton to intervene and ensure the swift hiring of new staff, so that the burden on the current staff can be removed.
He noted that the workers have been dedicated to their role and working under less than suitable circumstances. However, their current situation is unsustainable and poses a risk to both patients and staff.
The Opposition caretaker commended the staff at Port Maria Hospital for their unwavering dedication and urged them to continue doing their best despite the circumstances.
