Odell Marsh, Junior Shadow Spokesperson on Transport and Works, is urging the government to reconsider the proposed establishment of an international airport in Negril.

Instead, Marsh is advocating for significant improvements to the existing road network to provide better access for passengers travelling from Donald Sangster International Airport to Negril and its surrounding areas.

“While the PNP fully acknowledges the value of expanding Jamaica’s tourism infrastructure, we believe that enhancing road connectivity should be a priority. Many visitors to our beautiful island arrive at Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, and it is essential to ensure they can reach their destinations, such as Negril, safely and efficiently,” Marsh said in a statement on Tuesday, October 22.

The shadow spokesperson has put forward the following reasons for rethinking the airport proposal:

  • Immediate Accessibility: Many tourists currently face challenges navigating the roadways between Montego Bay and Negril. By focusing on road improvements, we can significantly reduce travel times, enhance visitor satisfaction, and promote tourism in the region.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Establishing a new international airport entails enormous financial costs and extensive implementation timelines. Directing those resources towards upgrading existing road infrastructure is a more pragmatic approach that can yield quicker results in improving transportation for both locals and visitors.
  • Safety and Reliability: A well-maintained road network is essential for ensuring passenger safety. Enhancing key routes can help prevent accidents and ensure travellers can rely on safe and timely transportation, which is fundamental to a positive tourism experience.

Marsh further noted that constructing a new airport also raises significant environmental concerns, particularly in Negril, which is renowned for its natural beauty.

He added that prioritising road upgrades is a more sustainable approach that minimises ecological disruption while facilitating better visitor access.
