Opposition Spokesperson on housing and sustainable development Floyd Morris says he is pleased that policies advanced by the People’s National Party (PNP) in its 2025 Mission Jamaica Love manifesto are now shaping national action.

According to the opposition senator, it follows the government’s move to adopt several initiatives that the PNP first proposed, as announced by Prime Minister Andrew Holness in his budget presentation on Thursday (March 19).

He highlighted three major initiatives now being implemented: the Young Owners Deposit Fund, reduced interest rates for public sector workers, and reforms to expand public access to Jamaica’s beaches. These policies were designed to remove barriers to home ownership, provide relief to hardworking public servants, and ensure that Jamaicans can fully enjoy and benefit from their natural resources.

“The fact that these policies are now being adopted demonstrates that advocating on behalf of the people can indeed make a difference, even while in opposition,” Senator Morris said. “We have consistently put forward practical, people-centred solutions, and it is clear that these ideas are now influencing national policy.”

He noted that the Young Owners Deposit Fund was conceptualised to support first-time homeowners by addressing one of the most significant challenges they face: accessing a deposit, thereby opening the door to homeownership for more young Jamaicans.

Senator Morris also pointed to the reinstatement of reduced interest rates for public sector workers as a necessary and welcome step, noting that such concessions were previously implemented under a PNP administration but later removed. “This reversal provides a much-needed cushion for public sector workers who continue to serve this country with dedication, often under challenging circumstances,” he added.

On beach access reform, he emphasised that protecting Jamaicans’ rights to their beaches is a matter of equity and national pride, and remains a critical part of ensuring inclusive development.

Senator Morris reaffirmed that the PNP will continue to champion policies that improve the lives of Jamaicans and ease the burden on families across the country.

“We will continue to advocate, propose, and push for solutions that put people first. We also encourage the Government to continue listening and to move with urgency in adopting additional measures to ease the pressures facing Jamaicans,” he said.
