Seven men were slapped with extortion and a slew of other charges by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) on Wednesday, October 18.

The operation, dubbed Transportation Streamline, targeted extortionists who prey on public passenger vehicles (PPVs) within the Half-Way Tree for ‘loading’ and other unscrupulous services.

The Public Safety & Traffic Enforcement Branch-led pre-dawn operation collared seven men, who were subsequently arrested for extortion, breaches of the main road act, and being in possession of offensive weapons. Their identities were not immediately disclosed.

According to PSTEB, the arrests are keeping with a joint commitment by the JCF, Transport Authority and Island Traffic Authority (ITA) to substantially improve safety and security as well as safe movement of persons within the transportation sector.

The branch further noted that similar operations will be implemented across the entire island.
