After days of teasing and promoting their collaboration on social media, dancehall artiste Popcaan and his rumoured girlfriend, former Miss World Toni-Ann Singh, have finally released the much-anticipated track, Next To Me.
The full music video, which features both celebrities, tells the story of a couple who are in love with each other.
The Anju Blaxx-produced track comes with a video directed by Nabil in which the couple make their way through the scenic countryside on a quad bike, taking in the sights and food along the way.
The song begins with Popcaan letting his girl know that she can stay next to him. Singh then interjects by singing, “You make me wanna run, run, run, heartbeat racing like a drum, drum, drum. Feel it in my soul, leave me wanting more.”
In response to her confession, Popcaan vocalises, “We could go anywhere, anywhere you choose, take you on a cruise. Girl, you are so beautiful, love to see you smiling. The love we have is never ending, tell me how you feeling.”
The visual for the song shows Popcaan pulling up outside a house to pick up his woman and, although she is happy to be with him, her father disapproves of the union. This might be a bit of a cliché, but who knows, it might actually be a representation of their relationship, which neither of them has either confirmed or denied.
In keeping with the line, “We can go anywhere”, Singh hops on the back of the quad driven by Popcaan and they go on a journey that takes them to a river, a park, a soup vendor and finally a river side bash with friends.
Singh compares the couples love and companionship for each other to that of Antony and Cleopatra. She chants, “Met a few life times ago, you were Antony, I was Cleo. Made the world a place only we know, if it’s not love then tell me what’s this feeling you giving me?”
Continuing, she pleads with her lover to leave if their love is not real. Throughout the video, the couple share numerous intimate moments which also include a full on kiss. The intimacy of the moment comes across as real world declaration of love and might be considered Popcaan and Singh finally admitting that they are in a relationship.
All in all, its an OK song, with an OK storyline. Nothing unexpected. Just a bit too predictable.
The video quality is great, and it will pleasing to most that the video was shot in Jamaica!
The single was released at midnight on Wednesday (November 30).
The song is Singh’s first ever professional piece.
Since its release and upload to YouTube, the song has already garnered 155,000 views, 1,675 comments and 24,000 likes.
