The Board of Directors of Portmore Community College (PCC) has announced the appointment of The Right Reverend Dr Austin Wright, CDKA, CGPA, PMMA, BH(M), JP as principal of the college, effective January 2.
Dr Wright brings over four decades of distinguished service in education, leadership, counselling psychology, ministry, and community development to this role. His appointment signifies a new chapter in PCC’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, transformational leadership, and national development.
Donmayne Gyles, Chairman of the Board, expressed his confidence in Dr Wright’s appointment, emphasising that his extensive experience and values-driven leadership align strongly with the college’s mission. “We are confident that Dr Wright’s vision, experience, and servant-leadership approach will further strengthen Portmore Community College and advance its mission of providing equal educational opportunities,” Gyles stated.
Distinguished Educational and Leadership Record

Dr Wright is a nationally and internationally respected educator who has served as Principal at several Jamaican institutions, including Mount James All-Age School, Greenwich All-Age School, Constant Spring Primary and Junior High School, and, for over sixteen years, as Principal of José Martí Technical High School. He is certified by the National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL). He has received numerous awards, including the Golden Torch Award from the Jamaica Teachers’ Association for 38 years of exemplary service.
His professional career also includes roles as an Education Officer at the Ministry of Education, Lecturer at St. Joseph’s Teachers’ College, The Mico University College, and the International University of the Caribbean. He has served for more than twenty-seven years as Chief External Assessor for Teacher Education.
Academic, Counselling, and National Contributions
Dr Wright holds earned doctorates in Education (Ed.D.) and Ministry (D.Min.), as well as multiple postgraduate qualifications in strategic leadership and management. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in the United Kingdom. As a Licensed Professional Educational Psychologist, he integrates mental health practices with educational and pastoral leadership.
His national honours include the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service to Religion, Education, and Community Development, the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation, and several international commendations. Dr Wright is also a Justice of the Peace, an Executive Chaplain, and a Certified Marriage Officer in both Jamaica and the United States.
Leadership Transition and Appreciation

The Board also thanks Dr Andrea Nickle-Higgins for her outstanding service as Acting Principal during the leadership transition. A long-standing member of the PCC community, Dr Nickle-Higgins provided steady and capable leadership, ensuring continuity following the retirement of Corrine Richards. Richards concluded her nearly decade-long tenure as Principal at PCC on November 3, 2024, leaving a lasting legacy of academic growth, inclusivity, and institutional development. The college remains committed to building on the strong foundation she established. Dr Nickle-Higgins has now returned to her previous post as Senior Vice Principal for Administration and Operations.
PCC warmly welcomes Dr Wright and looks forward to collaborating under his leadership to ensure the continued success and advancement of the Portmore-based institution.
