Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Friday handed over three additional housing units to Jamaicans deemed most in need.

The provisions are part of the Government’s New Social Housing Programme (NSHP), a significant component of the Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment (HOPE) programme, established in 2018.

The Programme was developed to improve the housing condition of the country’s poor and disadvantaged population by providing quality, affordable and sustainable housing.

The newly allocated housing units are situated in strategic areas to benefit those requiring urgent assistance: Lot 129 Callaloo Mews in St Andrew Western; 11½ Ladd Lane in Kingston Central; and 1137 Barbican Road in St Andrew North Eastern.

Holness, who is also the Minister of Economic Growth and Job Creation, emphasised the Government’s commitment to tackling housing challenges, pointing out that “we cannot leave people behind”.

“So, a part of the Government’s strategy, as we go for growth, is to make sure that those who are at the lowest echelon of society are covered. This is probably the most fulfilling part of my job, and it shows in a very direct way how the Government and its policies are changing lives and how taxpayers’ resources are being put to good use,” he added.

The Government estimates that there are about 6,000 households that exist in poor housing conditions. To date, more than 251 units have been handed over under the NSHP.

Prime Minister Holness further disclosed that about 61 additional housing units are ready to be handed over or are under construction. This means the programme has passed the 300-housing unit mark.

Meanwhile, one beneficiary of the homes handed over on Friday, Karen Francis, expressed gratitude for the provision.

“I feel so good to know that I have a brand-new house to live in. My condition was worse, so I give God thanks,” she stated.

Another recipient, Richard Edwards, echoed her sentiments, pointing out that the structure he previously occupied “was a dump, in a sense”.

“It’s a palace right now. We have a strong roof over our heads… so when a storm comes, we don’t have to worry about that. We’re looking forward for greater things,” he said.

The New Social Housing Programme is divided into three implementation modalities. Under the provision of indigent housing, benefits will be equitably distributed across all 63 constituencies, with each receiving five units per annum. Approximately 315 housing units per annum will be constructed under this modality.

The second, relating to relocation of vulnerable communities, sees persons whose lives are in imminent danger being given priority attention.

Meanwhile, under upgrading of the tenements (‘big yards’) component, one project will be undertaken per constituency. Friday’s handover ceremony marks a significant milestone in the Government’s ongoing efforts to address housing needs and provide stability for vulnerable individuals and families across Jamaica.

The Administration’s dedication to the NSHP reflects a continuous drive towards creating a better quality of life for all citizens.
