Prime Minister Andrew Holness was scheduled to depart the island for Washington, DC today (December 6) for a visit during which he is slated to discuss security matters with several US state agencies.

The announcement was made by the prime minister during a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister, earlier today, where he again declared states of emergency in several parishes.

Holness said the aim of the meetings, in addition to other matters, is to try to sever the links between overseas players in the criminal underworld and those on the island, which often result in high levels of crime and violence.

The prime minister is scheduled to return to the island on Sunday (December 11).

During Holness’ absence, Dr Horace Chang, deputy prime minister and minister of national security, will be in charge of the Government.
