The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is urging individuals attending Christmas events to exercise caution and prioritise their personal safety.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Stephanie Lindsay, head of the JCF Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), emphasised the need for vigilance. She advises that while the police conduct their risk assessment of these eventualities, patrons must also take personal responsibility for their safety.
Lindsay stressed the importance of arranging transportation and planning the journey to and from events. The police conduct threat and risk assessments before granting event permits, considering factors such as ongoing gang feuds and unresolved conflicts in the area.
Lindsay said, “You can become a victim by just being a patron at an event, and individuals there may be having conflicts. You need to make certain checks before you go to events.”
“The safety of patrons is very big. It’s something that we look at as a priority when granting event permits, and that is why there are some instances where people apply for a permit and they are not granted, because of safety and security concerns,” she continued.
The JCF is also advising against excessive alcohol consumption at events noting that intoxicated individuals may be more susceptible to harm.
