Burmese-born psychiatrist, Dr Myo Oo will be conferred with the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service on National Heroes Day 2024 for his outstanding contribution to psychiatric care at Bellevue Hospital.

Dr Oo has dedicated over three decades to mental health care, making a profound impact on the lives of patients in Jamaica.

Arriving in Jamaica in December 1990 after serving in the Burmese army, Dr Oo sought new opportunities in the Caribbean. Reflecting on his journey, he noted that limited prospects in Burma led him to “find the green pasture” and realise his full potential. His passion for psychiatry has not only garnered respect from his peers but also helped elevate the standard of mental health services at Bellevue, Jamaica’s largest mental health facility.

Dr Oo’s recognition is part of the 2024 National Honours and Awards, where notable citizens are celebrated for their exceptional service to the nation.

His 9,642-mile journey from Burma to Jamaica is a reflection of his life of dedication, service, and the pursuit of better mental health care for all.
