Christian Pulisic didn’t just return to Milan’s starting XI on Sunday; he burst back into the match like someone who’d been waiting weeks to make noise.
His second-half goal and Mike Maignan’s ice-cold penalty save powered AC Milan to a 1-0 win over Inter.
Inter had hoped to climb to the top of Serie A, but Milan slammed that door shut. Roma, after beating Cremonese 3-1 earlier, ended the night sitting alone in first place with 27 points, while Milan and Napoli lurk two points behind.
Maignan took home player of the match, and even Pulisic, who had plenty to brag about, nodded along. The American winger had eased back from injury with a short appearance against Parma, nearly snatching a late winner. This time, he didn’t bother with almost.
Midway through the second half, Youssouf Fofana dug the ball away from Hakan Calhanoglu and launched Alexis Saelemaekers on a blazing break. Sommer parried the first shot, but Pulisic came tearing in and tucked away the rebound. Inter wasn’t short on danger. It rattled the woodwork twice before Pulisic struck, then earned a penalty when Strahinja Pavlovic clipped Marcus Thuram’s foot. But Maignan read Calhanoglu’s attempt like an open book and swatted it away.
