
It’s a tale of two cities and two clubs in Racing United and Vere United. One in St Catherine heading for the playoffs and the other in Clarendon, nose-diving towards relegation.
Both teams met over the weekend in the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League with newcomers Racing United of St Catherine pushing for a top-six playoff spot beating Clarendon’s Vere United 2-0.
Goals by Nickyle Ellis in the 12th minute and Tyrone Mullings in the 90th pushed Racing to their 11th win from 31 games and onto 44 points in the eighth spot.
They are just two points and two positions from a historic playoff in this, their first year in top-flight football.
For Vere United, they slipped to their 20th defeat of the season to be at the bottom of the league in 14th spot on 23 points. They are six points adrift of the two teams above them and are in desperate need of points to survive relegation.
Meanwhile, in a crucial relegation dog-fight, Molynes United and Humble Lion battled to a 1-1 draw that left both teams level on 29 points in 12th and 13th spots. One of them could join Vere in relegation at the end of the season.
Richard Ramsey scored a first-minute goal for Humble Lion while Nickache Murray responded for Molynes in the 57th minute.
At the other end of the spectrum, leaders Mount Pleasant and Tivoli Gardens played to a 0-0 stalemate as did Montego Bay United and Portmore United.
Mount Pleasant who have two games in hand, are on top with 69 points while Tivoli Gardens holding onto the last playoff spot in sixth on 46 points. Montego Bay United are third on 65 points while Portmore United are sitting pretty in fourth spot with 54 points.
In the marquee match of the round, Arnett Gardens and Cavalier SC played to an exciting 2-2.
Dwayne “Busy” Atkinson notched a double for Cavalier in the 16th and 42nd minutes as they came from behind twice for a share of the points. Fabian Reid (7th) and Warner Brown (25th) scored for Arnett Gardens.
Arnett Gardens are second on 66 points while Cavalier are fifth with 49 points.
An own goal by Richard Brown in the 43rd minute gave Harbour View a 1-0 win over Dunbeholden as they inched away from the relegation fighters to be in 10th spot on 31 points. Dunbeholden remained in ninth spot on 33 points.
The promoted Chapelton Maroons and Waterhouse FC battled to a 1-1 draw. Andre Fletcher gave Waterhouse a 52nd-minute lead before Dustin Cohen earned a share of the points for Chapelton in the 63rd minute.
Chapelton Maroons are sitting in 11th spot on 30 points while Waterhouse would be more disappointing as they dropped crucial points in their push for playoff sitting in seventh position on 45 points, one adrift of the last playoff spot.
