Rapper T-Pain today (February 3) declared that Black History Month should be done away with altogether, with the alternative being a year round celebration of the black community as a part of history.
“[White people should] stop celebrating it. I don’t think we should celebrate Black History Month. I think we should just have history,” the rapper said.
The musician argued that setting aside a month for the black community is the same as separating African Americans from everyone else, as was the common practice of the past.
“You [are] separating us again! We want to be part of history, not just one month of it. I’d rather everybody stop celebrating that s**t and just let us be part of history. And if you haven’t paid attention, it’s the shortest month of the year.”
While the singer raised points that have argued by others in the past, Black History Month has been a longstanding feature of the United States and across the world, and has arguably brought more attention to the accomplishments of Black people before it was established.
Although a specific time has been set aside to recall, reflect and celebrate the Black community, this does not dismiss the fact that Black people are not in fact a part of history on a whole.
However, with the notable struggles and hardships endured for decades, creating dedicated and time-sensitive celebrations to the events of the past, makes it even more deserving.
